Introduce Your Children to 80 "Must Know" Tales of
Courage, Wisdom, Wit and Kindness
that They Will Remember for a Lifetime
in These All-New Audiobook Collections!

For four generations, James Baldwin's classic "50 Famous Stories Retold" has introduced young readers to a wonderful collection of time-honored tales ... stories that have become an integral part of Western history and culture. These stories not only have deep value as tales of courage, wisdom, kindness and valor, but also contain core ideals and references that your children will encounter in many other readings and media for the rest of their lives. Many homeschool curriculums already recognize the importance of this book and highly recommend it as part of their own "core curriculum". But we've taken a great thing... and made it even better!

Our brand-new Audiobook presentation of these classic tales is especially neat in that our readers are homeschooled kids themselves.  Baldwin's versions of these tales are already great... but it is a true delight to hear them performed so well by these talented young readers. Your kids will really enjoy these audio readings, and in the process will become acquainted with a selection of time-honored stories which have become so incorporated into literature and history that a knowledge of them is an indispensable part of one’s education.

But our new 2 CD set doesn't end there. We've also produced a wonderful audio version of Baldwin's follow up book, "Thirty More Famous Stories Retold"!  Baldwin wrote this follow-up book of longer stories for kids who had enjoyed "50 Stories" and were asking for more... but those same young readers were also growing up and needed something a bit more challenging to read. Thus the tales in this collection are somewhat longer and have quite a bit more depth to them. It seems that this book has been virtually overlooked by the homeschooling curriculum-makers... but we actually found it an even richer, more satisfying collection of stories than the classic "50"! We have no doubt your family will treasure this companion audio collection as well.

Meet the Author...

James Baldwin (1841-1925)

The wonderfully lively and clear writings of James Baldwin are almost forgotten today, and many of his 50+ books are long out of print. However, at one time his influence was tremendous: It has been estimated that during the early years of the 20th century over half of all the school books in use in the United States were written or edited by Baldwin.

James Baldwin was a self-educated American writer born in a rural Quaker settlement in Indiana in 1841. Few people in his community owned any book other than the Bible, and reading was viewed with suspicion. However, Baldwin's own home was an exception to the rule in this backwoods community, for Baldwin's father had assembled an extensive personal library. From boyhood, he had a passion for reading and classic books, and read voluminously, suffering the taunts of his school companions and neighbors members who considered too much book-learning the tool of the Devil.

His early career was spent both as a teacher and superintendent of schools in Indiana. After 20 years in the school systems, he found work editing text books with Harper & Brothers and the American Book Company. Observing the stilted and formal character of many of the text books of the day, Baldwin set out to write lively, clear and easy-to-read books of his own that did not talk down to readers. He chose the best of our literary heritage and cast it into a form that delighted children of all ages. Beginning with "The Story of Siegfried" in 1882, Baldwin wrote over 50 books retelling ancient and modern legends and stories, along with many historical and biographical works, including the much-loved stories in "Fifty Famous Stories Retold" and "30 More Famous Stories Retold". He died in 1925.

And here is the original Introduction to these stories by the Author:
THERE are numerous time-honored stories which have become so incorporated into the literature and thought of our race that a knowledge of them is an indispensable part of one’s education. These stories are of several different classes. To one class belong the popular fairy tales which have delighted untold generations of children, and will continue to delight them to the end of time. To another class belong the limited number of fables that have come down to us through many channels from hoary antiquity. To a third belong the charming stories of olden times that are derived from the literatures of ancient peoples, such as the Greeks and the Hebrews. A fourth class includes the half-legendary tales of a distinctly later origin, which have for their subjects certain romantic episodes in the lives of well-known heroes and famous men, or in the history of a people. It is to this last class that most of the fifty stories contained in the present volume belong. As a matter of course, some of these stories are better known, and therefore more famous, than others. Some have a slight historical value; some are useful as giving point to certain great moral truths; others are products solely of the fancy, and are intended only to amuse. Some are derived from very ancient sources, and are current in the literature of many lands; some have come to us through the ballads and folk tales of the English people; a few are of quite recent origin; nearly all are the subjects of frequent allusions in poetry and prose and in the conversation of educated people. Care has been taken to exclude everything that is not strictly within the limits of probability; hence there is here no trespassing upon the domain of the fairy tale, the fable, or the myth. That children naturally take a deep interest in such stories, no person can deny; that the reading of them will not only give pleasure, but will help to lay the foundation for broader literary studies, can scarcely be doubted. It is believed, therefore, that the present collection will be found to possess all educative value which will commend it as a supplementary reader in the middle primary grades at school. It is also hoped that the book will prove so attractive that it will be in demand out of school as well as in.

CD #2:

"Thirty More Famous Stories Retold"
by James Baldwin

Yes, there are fewer stories on this CD, but each of these 30 stories are longer than those on the "50 Stories" collection, as they were originally written for somewhat older readers. There are wonderful moral lessons as well as history in these great tales from the past. They run from 5 to 25 minutes each. (Total length 4 1/2 hours) Our reader for these stories is Anna Sul, (at right with one of her children) who also narrated several stories on our delightful Shakespeare collection.

Sir Isaac Newton and the Apple
File Size: approx 7 megs / Running time: 5 minutes

From the Author's Original Introduction to these stories:
IT is now more than a year since you read my “Fifty Famous Stories.” Those stories, as you will remember, are quite short and easy. Before you had finished your second year at school you could read every one of them without stopping to study the meaning of the words. Many thousands of children have read those fifty stories, and then they have asked for more; and this is my excuse for the present volume. You are older now, and you have learned many things which you did not know when we first became acquainted. You are able to read almost everything. And so, in telling you “Thirty More Famous Stories,” I have chosen more difficult subjects and have not been so careful to select the shortest and easiest words. Still, you will not find this book hard to read, neither do I think it will prove to be less interesting than the earlier volume. Nearly all the stories are true, and there are not more than three or four that might not have happened. In every one there is something worth learning and remembering.

The REAL Robinson Crusoe

Baby Snooks tells the story of Robinson Crusoe
Next, a humorous look at the Robinson Crusoe story, as BABY SNOOKS (of all people) mangles up the story of Robinson Crusoe in her own hilarious way.

Audiobook:
"Robinson Crusoe Retold for Young Listeners"
by James Baldwin
Finally, we close out our Crusoe selections with the complete Audiobook reading of Baldwin's wonderful version of Defoe's classic tale of Robinson Crusoe, Retold for Young Listeners. If you've ever tried to struggle through Defoe's original, you know how dense and tough going it can be. Baldwin's version is a fast paced adventure, retaining all the story and fun of the original. This is a three and 1/2 hour audio reading of the complete book!
