This week:

The Slate that Didn't Break

Dear Friends,

Well, as forecast, things got chilly here over the weekend, and most of our flowers got bit by the frost and have departed this mortal coil. The trees, however, are really starting to take up the slack in colors, so we are looking forward to their show the next few weeks.

With the holidays just around the corner, our big news here is that we've just about finished updating and expanding our Holiday Stories Collection. Hopefully, we will have that available in a week or so. This thing has over 105 WONDERFUL Thanksgiving and Christmas audio programs on it... PLUS a bunch of extra goodies.

We have several favorite holiday programs that we just have to listen to, year after year. There's just something about these good hearted and nostalgic stories that gives our holiday season a whole new layer of meaning here in our household. I know a lot of our long time friends already make these programs a part of their family holiday tradition too.

Tell you what... All you folks who have gotten one or more of our Holiday CDs in the past: Would you drop us a line in the next couple of days and share with us a few of your favorite stories... and how these programs have become a part of YOUR family holiday tradition? How have you used them...  what your kids think of these classic tales... what kind of atmosphere they create in your household, etc. We'd love to hear from you... and if we quote your comments, we'll send you a copy of our updated, even-more-chock-full-of-wonderful-holiday-goodies-than-ever Collection next week. Click here to send us an email

And speaking of holidays, we still highly recommend Sheri Graham's "12 Week Holiday Planner for the Christian Family", which we mentioned to you a couple weeks ago. This is a wonderful tool to help you begin your holiday planning now, so your family can have a much ore meaningful, organized, Jesus-centered holiday season. With week-by-week planning tips, forms, recipes, memory making ideas, and so on, this great ebook includes pretty much everthing you could need to plan out your holidays & set up your very own Holiday Planner. Our favorite section of the book is the wonderful Advent devotional series written by Ann Voskamp, "The Glorious Coming: A Jesse Tree Celebration of Advent" - these are wonderful, poetic devotionals, incorporating some very special ornaments and instructions to make your own "Jesse Tree". The Erskines say, if you need a little help making it through the holidays -- with a peaceful spirit intact -- now's the time to check it out. Click Here for Details!

Okay, now onward now to...
THE PROGRAM OF THE WEEK

Adventures In Research:
The Slate That Didn't Break

Here's an excellent story about an almost forgotten pioneer American Inventor, Thomas Blanchard, whose inventions revolutionized modern manufacturing. Blanchard was a real handfull as a boy. He was thrown out of school for rowdiness, and burned down his family's kitchen trying to "invent" his own blacksmith's kiln. His punishment for these offenses... to be apprenticed to his brother, hammering out tacks twelve hours a day in his factory. But what Thomas did next changed the course of the industrial revolution forever....

This episode of Adventures in Research was originally syndicated to radio stations in the late 1940s.

Resource: Here's a great profile of Thomas Blanchard, with photos and an audio version too! Listen to it first, and then to this week's program!

Resource: The drawing at the top of this page is Blanchard's tack making machine. The one just above is his gun barrel lathe.

That's it for this time! "Tune in" and enjoy!

Best Wishes,
The Erskine Family

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS below if you are unfamiliar with downloading a file or are having any problems with your download.

To download a program, RIGHT click (use the right hand button on your mouse) the link above, and "save target as" (or "save link as") to the directory of your choice.

The file should start downloading right away. If it doesn't, try it again, and follow these instructions carefully. (DON'T cut and paste this link into your web browser -- that will just PLAY the program over the internet (it will be jumpy and start & stop a lot), and will not DOWNLOAD the program. If you want to download it to your computer, you need to follow the above instructions.)

NOTE: If the file just starts playing over your computer right away, that's because you clicked the link with the LEFT hand button on your mouse. You need to click the RIGHT HAND button to download the whole show to your computer.

IF you right click the link and your computer does not allow you to "save target", you need to adjust your computer's security settings (or disable your "internet content advisor" settings) to allow downloaded files.

MAC USERS: In order to download these files, hold down the Control key then click the link with your mouse.  It will then download to the directory you choose.

If your download is unusually slow, it could be because our server is busy or overtaxed. You might try again at a later hour. It should - eventually - work fine.

This file will be available for the next week or two only, so don't put off downloading it if you want a copy.
