The Story of Johnny Appleseed
as told by Boris Karloff

Greetings Friends!

Well, we survived our marathon Civil War Days here in Hart County, and I'm happy to say it was our largest, best event here ever. If you've never been involved in putting on a large scale festival, let me tell you it is a huge task... with hundreds of nagging details demanding your attention. One of my favorite moments happened not at our battle re-enactment, nor at our concerts, and not even at the Grand Blue-Grey Ball... but instead it was a dirty, grimy moment when our gathered crowd moved their chairs off our "dance floor" (the street on which our tent was placed) in preparation for the beginning of the Civil War dance ball. The place was a mess, with food and trash all over the place, but nobody lifted a finger to do anything about it. I quickly asked a few of the younger boys in our local scout troop to help clean it up, and they hopped to it, picking up all that trash with their bare hands in front of hundreds of people just sitting there watching them. It impressed the local folks to no end. One gentleman got up and gave each of them a gold plated CW medallion, and several folks commented on how well the scouts had kept the grounds (and the porta potties) clean all weekend. We even got a nice letter from President & Mrs. Jefferson Davis and President Lincoln complimenting them for their hard work and willingness to do the yucky jobs that must be done to make a festival click. That just made my day.

A few quick housekeeping notes:

How to Access Our Past Programs: Just in case you do miss one of our weekly programs, remember that we do keep an archive of the past month's programs on our blog. Just look for the posting "Current Archived Programs".

How to Change your email address: If you are a subscriber to our newsletter list and need to change your email address, here's how to do it: Just go to our home page www.homeschoolradioshows.com and fill out the subscription form with your new address, then be sure to respond to the confirmation email you'll then receive. Unfortunately, we can't do that from here, you need to do it yourself. After that, you can feel free to unsubscribe your old address simply by clicking the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of any of our emails. You can also use that link to leave our list at any time if you need to drop off temporarily or permanently.

Collections currently unavailable: The following collections are no longer available: Science vs. Superstition; Family, Faith and Home; Fairy Tales and Wonder Stories; and Mr. President. We are working on new, improved editions of these, and will be releasing them later in the year or early in 2008. Until then, these are not available for purchase.

Coming Up: In fact, our new version of Fairy Tales and Wonder Stories will be the first "new and improved" release, hopefully later this month. We have added so much material to this, it is practically a new collection. Actually, it is our kids who have added new material... including a video, a coloring book, and audiobook versions of the original classic tales to go along with our dramatized radio stories. We'll tell you more about this soon, it is going to be great.

Okay, onward to this week's audio program:
The Story of Johnny Appleseed
as told by Boris Karloff

Here is a fine folktale version of the story of the legendary American character Johnny Appleseed, as told for children by Boris Karloff (who most kids these days will recognize as the voice of the Grinch). Also included in this program is Dennis Day's "The Lord is Good to Me" song from the Disney version of Johnny Appleseed, plus Burl Ives' "Blue Tailed Fly". Little ones will especially enjoy this. This program was originally aired in 1950 on New York station WNEW's short-lived radio series "Boris Karloff's Treasure Chest".

RESOURCE: The real Johnny Appleseed (as opposed to the folktale version in our story above) was one complex and intriguing character, as explained in this Wikipedia entry. Such is the case with many of our legendary American figures. It might be interesting to discuss the differences between the folktale and reality with your kids.

Here's the Download link for you:

Johnny Appleseed
(Running time: 14:00 - File size:3.6 megs)

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS below if you are unfamiliar with downloading a file or are having any problems with your download.

To download a program, RIGHT click (use the right hand button on your mouse) the link above, and "save target as" (or "save link as") to the directory of your choice.

The file should start downloading right away. If it doesn't, try it again, and follow these instructions carefully. (DON'T cut and paste this link into your web browser -- that will just PLAY the program over the internet (it will be jumpy and start & stop a lot), and will not DOWNLOAD the program. If you want to download it to your computer, you need to follow the above instructions.)

NOTE: If the file just starts playing over your computer right away, that's because you clicked the link with the LEFT hand button on your mouse. You need to click the RIGHT HAND button to download the whole show to your computer.

IF you right click the link and your computer does not allow you to "save target", you need to adjust your computer's security settings (or disable your "internet content advisor" settings) to allow downloaded files.

MAC USERS: In order to download these files, hold down the Control key then click the link with your mouse.  It will then download to the directory you choose.

If your download is unusually slow, it could be because our server is busy or overtaxed. You might try again at a later hour. It should - eventually - work fine.

This file will be available for the next week or two only, so don't put off downloading it if you want a copy.
