Booklet Publishing Secrets Dear Jim, I often receive emails from aspiring booklet publishers asking me to reveal the "secrets" of successful booklet publishing. On paper, it appears that my own business was an overnight success. In reality, though... it took quite a while. It didn't take long to write the booklet. It didn't take long to publish it. It didn't take long to market the booklet, either. What took the longest was GETTING STARTED. One of the greatest lessons I've learned to apply in business as well as my personal life can be summed up with one word - SIMPLIFY. I express this idea through my domain name - "simplepublications.com." Simple. In other words, the less steps required in the process, the better. While it's true that life can often be very complex and sometimes overwhelmingly confusing... our approach to it does not. In the not too distant past, I'd often find myself trying to fit 3 days worth of plans into a single day. And three projects into the time allotted for one. When all was said and done, I'd find myself mentally exhausted. And I'd be no further along with any of my plans than I had been when I started. I crammed so much into so little a space of time... desperately hoping something would take off and succeed. But nothing did. Not in a big way, anyway. What I lacked with the all-critical ability to focus. I wanted to it all... and in the process... completed virtually nothing. ************************* THAT ALL CHANGED Thankfully, that all changed. In fact, it continues to change right up to the time of this writing. I had to ask myself the question; what do I REALLY want to do? What do I desire to do SO MUCH that I'm willing to let other things go in order to get it accomplished? I broke it down to 3 things in my business life and 4 things in my personal life. A narrower focus... but not narrow enough. What if I only had time to do a few things? What would I choose. I narrowed the above down to 2 things in my business life and 1 in my personal life. By narrowing the focus... about 60% of my "lost energy" returned almost immediately. ************************* REPROGRAMMING THE COMPUTER Take a page from several self-help experts... I wrote my life goals [all 3 of them] on an index card along with this statement; "I'm not the person I used to be and I will not let the past dictate who I am now and who I am about to become." I read and "mentally chewed" on the above - first thing in the morning... and then again before going to bed. Almost overnight, my mental outlook changed from "wearied" to "energized." I can't tell you how many life-changed principles I've read and studied throughout the years. And I can tell you this from experience; it would be better to only know a few and FOCUS on doing them than knowing dozens upon dozens and implementing them sporadically. ************************* DO YOU REALLY WANT TO PUBLISH? I decided to go the publishing route. Simple Publications. Not too long... not overly fancy. The same for my marketing strategy. Nothing that will volumes of books... unless you want to complicate things. I went with publishing "Non-fiction" as opposed to "Fiction." The reason for that was simple, too. Money. I saw a need and filled it. Eventually, Lord willing, I'll get to my novel. But not right now. The simple approach and simple follow-through with "How-To" publications has been very good to me! With little focus... if this is what you really want to do... I believe it will be really GOOD to you too! - Jimmy ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Software Review PagePlus 9 I first started using PagePlus way back in the late 1980's with version 2 of their award-winning desktop publishing package. The program was a great alternative to the expensive high-end packages. What impressed me the most about the product was the fact that it was designed by Graphic Designers... FOR Graphic Designers. A few years later, the company was sold. Last month I received an offer (as I do every year) to upgrade to version 9 for only $9.95. That was for a full-working version of the program, not a cd looking for a previously installed version. How can you go wrong for $9.95? And after all, I hadn't checked the program out in a number of years. My verdict? PagePlus 9 has all the features the average desktop publishing enthusiast will ever need. The full cost to "get in the door" for first-time buyers is $134.99. To me, the price of admission is worth it. Not only do you get high-end features found in programs like Quark Express and Adobe. .. you get the ease of use that you would with a program like Microsoft Publisher. And yes, PagePlus 9 has a feature for creating books/booklets. And that's not all. It's also capable of creating Press-ready PDF files and secure PDF files as well. If you're not quite happy with Microsoft, I encourage you to take a look at PagePlus 9. You can do so at http://www.serif.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3.
