Best-Selling Booklet Publishing Dear Jim, Imagine selling thousands... even hundreds of thousands, of your very own booklet publications. That would be great, wouldn't it? How about hundreds? Would that be bad? Hey, money is money - right? It's more money than you would have right now. Isn't it? What about selling 50 copies of a particular title? When you get right down to it, no one can guarantee hitting it BIG each time out. Like most things in life, there are no guarantees where people are involved. What we can do, however, is "tilt" the odds in our favor. Like fishing, sometimes the fish just aren't biting. It can go beyond the bait (marketing). Sometimes the water is too cold... and the fish move to other areas. There are times people spend money, and there are times they won't. Yeah, good marketing helps... but there are factors that are beyond your immediate control. PART-TIME PUBLISHING Several months ago, a friend of mine told me he wanted to get into the booklet publishing business. He didn't want to sell to companies like I do. He wanted to sell to niche markets instead. Using Microsoft Publisher, he created two booklets within a period of three weeks. He offered one title to a hobbyist club he belonged to in his home town. Within a month, he sold almost a 170 copies. His profit was slightly over $5.00 a copy. That brought his net profit to about $900. He was as happy as could be! His second title flopped... but he hasn't given up on it yet. As a full-time working father of two, he's perfectly happy to write and publish on a part-time basis. Using what he has where he's at... he's now on the road to publishing booklets for small niche markets and selling them through clubs and associations. His whole operation is in-house. A laser printer is used to create the text pages. An ink jet for the covers... and a bookletmaker binds them together. He then brings his booklets to a local printer who trims the edges for a few bucks. Part-time publishing on the proverbial shoe-string. Sure, regardless of where your market is and the size of your operation, who wouldn't want a big hit? It doesn't matter if you're selling to companies, organizations, clubs or individuals. You want to hit it big! But don't look down upon small beginnings. After my friend's success with his niche market, I too have considered rolling-out a few "pet project" publications. I'll keep you posted... - Jimmy ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2.
