GLOSSY COVERS [PART 2] In the last issue of “The Jimmy Krug Report,” we were talking about creating glossy booklet covers and the various methods (including the pro’s and con’s) of creating professional looking booklet covers. Low cost methods will not be without inherent downsides. With today’s high-impact inks, laminating your Ink-Jet or laser printer output will certainly create a very professional looking product. There are, of course, downsides to laminating as I said earlier. Another option is printing on glossy finished card stock. With this option it’s best to use a white glossy cover stock. Colors will show the best against the white background. On the downside, some printers may have more difficulties running a thicker card stocks than others. Also, there are very few printers on the market that can print “cleanly” on pre-laminated/glossy finished card stock. Water-based inks used by Ink Jet printers will usually bead, run and smudge on this type of finish. The coated paper does not allow the ink to absorb into the paper. Even laser printers may struggle with this type of paper. A more attractive option would be the use of photo glossy inkjet paper for your booklet covers. With the six-color ink capabilities and borderless printing, you can produce some incredibly professional looking covers. Is there are drawback to this method? Well, the cost of photo glossy paper may be one. You should be able to find some decent prices online, however. The other drawback comes back to water-based inks. Water, wet fingers, etc. can cause smudging, smearing and running of ink. Of all the low-cost options, however, I’d say that the Ink Jet/Photo paper option would be the most attractive to pursue at this point in time. Remember, we’re talking about printing small runs of booklets, not hundreds or thousands. With ever-increasing technology and affordable printer output, the home-based self-publisher can now create publications that look better than ever. It will be interesting to see what the next generation of printers will be capable of in the months ahead. - Jimmy Krug ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2.
