"In fourteen-hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue..."
... and today, in honor of this great explorer, we celebrate Columbus Day here in North America (although it is observed on Monday to give government workers a three day weekend, it actually falls on Wednesday this year). Here are TWO great programs about Columbus for you to listen to this week, giving you two unique retellings of this amazing story from two very different vantage points:
You Are There: Columbus Discovers America
Radio reporters onboard the Santa Maria interview the Captain and crew, and give you a first-hand look at the voyage in this classic episode of "You Are There" first broadcast on October 17, 1948.The Jewels of the Queen
Queen Isabella of Spain provided the financing for Columbus' expedition by offering some of her own jewelry to the explorer. Hear how that came about, and the ultimate results of that act in this episode of "Family Theater" which was first broadcast on October 10, 1951Resource: Check out this great site about Christopher Columbus, which includes a timeline of his life, profiles of his ships and crew, how he navigated, etc. Cool stuff.

To download a program, RIGHT click (use the right hand button on your mouse) the link above, and "save target as" (or "save link as") to the directory of your choice.

If you want to download it to your computer, you need to follow the above instructions.)

IF you right click the link and your computer does not allow you to "save target", you need to adjust your computer's security settings (or disable your "internet content advisor" settings) to allow downloaded files.
MAC USERS: In order to download these files, hold down the Control key then click the link with your mouse. It will then download to the directory you choose.
If your download is unusually slow, it could be because our server is busy or overtaxed. You might try again at a later hour. It should - eventually - work fine.
This file will be available for the next week or two only, so don't put off downloading it if you want a copy.
